Sitemap.xml
A sitemap.xml is an XML file giving search engines a complete list of indexable URLs on a site, with metadata about freshness and priority.
A sitemap.xml is a standardised URL list helping crawlers efficiently discover site structure. For large or poorly-linked sites, a sitemap dramatically improves indexing. Submenus, deep detail pages and recently added content are presented explicitly to Google and Bing.
Example
A shop with 50,000 products uses split sitemaps (sitemap-products-1.xml, -2.xml) referenced via a sitemap-index file. Google crawls purposefully instead of by accident.
Frequently asked questions
Is a sitemap mandatory?
No, but strongly recommended. For sites under ~500 pages little need; for larger sites and news sites essential.
