Breadcrumbs
Breadcrumbs are a navigation trail showing the current page's hierarchical position within the site, also displayed as a navigation element in the SERP via structured data.
Breadcrumbs show users where they are in the site hierarchy (Home › Category › Subcategory › Product). With BreadcrumbList schema markup Google replaces the full URL in the SERP with this clickable trail — more readable, higher CTR. For deep e-commerce and content sites, a no-brainer.
Example
A shop marks every product page with BreadcrumbList JSON-LD: Home › Shoes › Sneakers › Model X. In the SERP that trail appears instead of /shoes/sneakers/model-x.
Frequently asked questions
With or without schema?
Always with. Without BreadcrumbList schema Google doesn't recognise them as a navigation element and shows the bare URL. JSON-LD in the head is simplest.
Do breadcrumbs help SEO?
Indirectly yes. They improve internal linking, distribute topical authority and raise CTR through clearer SERP display. Not a direct ranking factor, but a measurable boost.
