ChatGPT is OpenAI's consumer-friendly assistant, launched in November 2022 and now one of the largest AI channels globally, with hundreds of millions of monthly users. Under the hood sits a series of LLMs (GPT-4o, GPT-5) augmented with tools like web search, code execution and file reading. For GEO it matters for two reasons: many professionals use ChatGPT as their first search channel, and ChatGPT (in Search mode) actively cites web sources — direct visibility opportunities.

A user with a paid ChatGPT account asks 'which Dutch SEO agencies specialise in crypto?'. ChatGPT performs a web search, reads the pages, and produces an answer with 3–5 citations to individual agency sites. Those cited get both brand exposure and traffic.
