Content gap analysis

By Paul Brock·Updated on 22-04-2026
TL;DR

Content gap analysis is identifying topics competitors rank for that you don't, usually as basis for prioritising new content.

Content gap analysis reveals which keywords direct competitors rank for and you don't. Tools (Ahrefs Content Gap, Semrush Keyword Gap, Sistrix) compare domains and output a list of missed opportunities. Combined with search-intent analysis this often produces the most effective content planning: you build on what demonstrably works in your market.

Example

An SEO agency compares itself to three competitors. Gap analysis shows 150 keywords where all three rank, the agency doesn't. Top 20 becomes the content backlog for six months.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I repeat a gap analysis?
